Here are the best horror films, that will scare the living daylights out of you. Slasher films, classics, past decade movies, and some of the best comedy-horror films have been included too.
Lately, popular horror movies are the ones infused with a lot of gore and violence. Some of these movies are shocking and nauseating, but downright thrilling. It is possible that you might find the gory movies like Saw very entertaining.
However, you can't ignore classics like Psycho and Rosemary's Baby which can still scare the pants off you. Every time you watch such classic films, you can observe the details and layers the filmmaker has introduced in the movie. Also, there are some really great movies among the comedy-horror sub-genre, that can make you jump in your seat.
Here are a few horror movies categorized in four parts - classic, past decade, gore/violence and comedy-horror.

Top 10 Scary Classics

Psycho (1960)
This world-famous film is directed by Alfred Hitchcock. In the movie, Marion Crane (Janet Leigh), checks into a motel after stealing a big sum of money from her employer following which the two of her dear ones, (her boyfriend and sister), start looking for her, eventually in the motel.
The Man Who Laughs (1928)
This movie tells the story of Gwynplaine who has a permanent smile carved on his face by the king. Just imagine.. arrgh!

Rosemary's Baby (1968)
A young couple moves to a new apartment, and realize they are surrounded by weird neighbors.
Eraserhead (1977)
If you liked Rosemary's Baby then you will like this one even better. A man is trying to survive in an industrial environment and dealing with his girlfriend and newborn child.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
This is a classic slasher film, and watching scenes of the chainsaw wielding killer and his family will scare your wits off.
Repulsion (1965)
Not everybody knows about this movie, but is a very unique movie that will spook you. Carol, habitual of sleepwalking, when left alone in her flat, slowly descends to madness.

The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Do you even need a description? The psychological factor in this movie still gives me the goose bumps.
Halloween (1978)
The original Halloween movie is the best and the suspense in it will keep you on the edge of your seat.

The Exorcist (1973)
The old Exorcist movies has some really frightening scenes like the head turning scene. Yikes!

The Omen (1976)
The old Omen movie is one of the best horror movie ever made, however the new one is a real disappointment.

Dead Alive (1992)
Originally known as Braindead, this movie is fast-paced and downright crazy.

Aftermath (1994)
Watch this movie at your own risk. It's got some really disturbing scenes. Did you know that the actor found some of the uncomfortable scenes quite difficult to perform?
Saw (2004)
The whole series of Saw is pretty shocking, but the first part still remains the best.

Resident Evil (2002)
It's awesome to watch Milla Jovovich, as Alice, kick the butt of blood-thirsty zombies and weird mutant dogs!

Hostel (2005)
This is another movie which is so gory, that you need an empty stomach to watch it.
Carrie (1976)
This classic is based on Stephen King's novel. It terrifies yet evokes pity.

Wrong Turn (2003)
Watching disfigured men eating human flesh will really gross you out...

Evil Dead (1981)
The fright scale on this movie is pretty high, yet there are times when you find it comical.
Dawn of the Dead (1978)
This is a classic film, full of gore and violence, which will shock you every time you watch it.

Inside (2007)
A strange woman keeps haunting a pregnant woman for her unborn baby. Terrifying!

Ju-on: The Grudge (2002)
The Ring was good, but the original Japanese version is better. The best part about the movie is that it lacks the typical elements of a horror film.

28 Days Later (2002)
This movie was a good surprise. The suspense in the film was good as we see the hero roaming in an abandoned city.
The Conjuring (2013)
It is based on the real experiences of supernatural activity investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren. The very thought of it is enough to send chills up the spine.

Let the Right One In (2008)

This movie is hard to describe. Basically, it is about a vampire girl and her friend. You will be so drawn in the movie, it's awesome!
[Rec] (2007)
This is one of the top scary films of the past decade; watching the reporter and cameraman trapped in the apartment will keep you wondering about what's gonna happen next.

The Descent (2005)
The dark scenes in the movie are so scary that half of the time you don't know what's happening, and where the weird creatures are coming from. Scary!
Paranormal Activity (2007)
The original is good, but as more parts of the series keep coming, the scare factor does goes down. But, the initial release is good.

The Orphanage (2007)
This is a Spanish film, which has a great visual appeal. You might not find it very scary, but it will surely make you nervous.
The Eye (2002)
A girl gets an eye surgery, which enables her to see, but she sees more than what the normal eye can.

Hard Candy (2005)

This movies stars Ellen Page (remember Juno). Her acting is superb, and the ending is awesome. Watch!

Martyrs (2008)
This is a French film in which a woman is seeking revenge, but the story gets really twisted.
Annabelle (2014)
Yes, it's the story of the same possessed doll from 'The Conjuring'. It is narrated by Ed and Lorraine Warren based upon their experiences. Watch at your own risk.

Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015)
An evil spirit targets and hurts Quin, a young girl, who goes to the psychic to connect with her departed mother. Scary enough to make you feel restless.
Oculus (2013)
Oculus is written, directed and edited by Mike Flanagan. A little complicated to understand, this film is more of a psychological thriller. It is based on the lives of two siblings, Kaylie and Tim, and memories of their deceased parents, and their encounters with the supernatural activities and the vivid hallucinations the mirror creates.

Top 10 Funny Horror Flicks

Child's Play (1988)
The Chucky movies are a little cheesy films, but you have to give it to the Chucky series, as they were absolutely fresh at the time, the first part was released.

An American Werewolf in London (1981)
An American Werewolf in London is scary, funny and brilliant. Watch it with your buddies, and make sure you have popcorn.
Shaun of the Dead (2004)
Shaun is trying to get his ex back, and dealing with the dead zombies at the same time.

Gremlins (1984)
Evil little gremlins wreak havoc on the town. Gremlins might look nasty, but the movie has some cute moments!

Young Frankenstein (1974)
This is very funny horror film, that will keep you laughing till the end.
Scream (1996)
Tatum: No, please don't kill me, Mr. Ghostface, You would want to be in the sequel! People still find the Scream movies pretty funny!

Tucker and Dale vs Evil (2010)
Tucker and Dale vs Evil is hilarious and has some cool special effects.

Frankenweenie (2012)
This is a brilliant Tim Burton film, where a science experiment brings back Sparky, the dog.
Zombieland (2009)
This is a highly rated film, and the characters are damn funny.

Beetlejuice (1988)
Another awesome Tim Burton movie, that you can watch and laugh.
