Monologues for Girls

A monologue is an uninterrupted dialog that a character, generally the protagonist recites in a play, movie or any other audio visual media. Here are some good monologues from both plays and movies.

Monologues are usually directed at another character, not always though. Sometimes they are directed at the audience, where the character gives a speech about his/her innermost feelings. The dramatic ones are very popular in plays, and the king of this genre is no one else but William Shakespeare.

There is no restriction to the number of lines that a character has to say. Usually an uninterrupted dialog with more than 10 lines which tells a story, is pivotal to the unfolding of the story, and which gives an insight into the character's personality and emotion can be described as a monologue.

» This one is from the movie 10 Things I Hate About You. It is a romantic comedy, which is loosely based on William Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew. Here the protagonist, a young high school girl named Kat reveals her feelings for Patrick, who had betrayed here before.

Kat: "I hate the way you talk to me. And the way you cut your hair. I hate the way you drive my car. I hate it when you stare. I hate your big dumb combat boots. And the way you read my mind. I hate you so much it makes me sick ... it even makes me rhyme. I hate the way you're always right...

...I hate it when you lie. I hate it when you make me laugh... even worse when you make me cry. I hate it that you're not around. And the fact that you didn't call. But mostly I hate the way I don't hate you...not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all."

» The next one is from the movie When Harry Met Sally where Sally tearfully tells Harry, how her ex boyfriend had called her up to inform that he was getting married.

Sally: "He just called me up 'wanted to see how you were', fine. 'How are you?', fine. His secretary's on vacation, everything is all backed up and he's got a big case to do, blah blah blah...

...And I'm sitting on the phone I'm thinking, I'm over him, I really am over him. I can't believe that I'd ever be remotely interested in any of that. And then he said 'I have some news.' She works in his office, she's a paralegal, her name is Kimberley. He just met her...

...She's supposed to be his transitional person, she's not supposed to be the one. All this time I've been saying that he didn't want to get married, but the truth is, he didn't want to marry me. He didn't love me."

» The next, from the movie Can't Hardly Wait, where Denise confronts her former best friend Kenny Fisher about his pretentious personality.

Denise: "I know exactly who you are. You're Kenny Fisher ... we used to ... we used to play Miami Vice in my basement. You used to sleepover my house ... you had to leave the hall light on every night...

...You're Kenny Fisher who used to buy me a card every Valentine's Day, and a bag of those little hearts with the words on them. And you're Kenny Fisher who suddenly got too cool to hang out with me when we hit junior high...

...Cause, I was in all the smart classes, and cause my parent's didn't make a lot of money. And cause you desperately needed to sit at the trendy table in the cafeteria."

» Here is one more monologue for women from the movie Silence of the Lambs where Clarice speaks about the worst memory from her childhood.

Clarice: "The worst memory of my childhood was the death of my father. He was a town Marshal, and one night he surprised two burglars coming out of a drugstore. They shot him...

...He was very strong. He lasted more than a month. My mother died when I was very young, so my father had become the whole world to me ... and, um ... when he died I had nothing. I was ten years old...

...After that I went to live for two months with my mother's cousin and her husband in Montana. They had a ranch with sheep and horses.
And one morning I just ran away while it was still dark. I then heard a strange noise. Like a child's voice. I went downstairs ... outside. I crept up to the barn. I was so scared to look inside but I had to. The lambs...

...They were screaming. At first I tried to free them. I opened the gate to their pen ... but they wouldn't run. They just stood there. Confused. They wouldn't run. I took one lamb, and I ran away as fast as I could...

...I don't know why I ran. I didn't have any food ... any water ... and it was very cold ... very cold. I thought if I could save just one ... but he was so heavy ... he was so heavy.
I didn't get more than a few miles before the sheriff's car picked me up. Rancher was so angry. He sent me to live at the Lutheran Orphanage, at Postman...

...I never saw the ranch again.
They killed my lamb."

» Some of the best monologues are from plays. The one given below is from the play A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams.

Blanche: "May I speak plainly? Well, if you'll forgive me, he's common. You can't have forgotten that much of our bringing up, Stella, to just suppose that any part of a gentleman is in his nature!...

...Not one particle, no! Oh, if he was just - ordinary! Just plain - but good and wholesome, but - no. There's something downright - bestial about him! You're hating me saying this, aren't you?...

...Well, he acts like an animal, has an animal's habits! Eats like one moves like one, talks like one! There's even something - sub-human - something not quite to the stage of humanity yet! Yes, something - ape-like about him, like one of those pictures I've seen in - anthropological studies!...

...Thousands and thousands of years have passed him by, and there he is - Stanley Kowalski - survivor of the stone age! Bearing the raw meat home from the kill in the jungle! And you - you here - waiting for him! Maybe he'll strike you or maybe grunt and kiss you! That is, if kisses have been discovered yet!...

...Night falls and all the other apes gather! There in front of the cave, all grunting like him, and swilling and gnawing and hulking! His poker night you call it - this party of apes! Somebody growls - some creature snatches at something - the fight is on!...

...Maybe we are a long way from being made in God's image, but Stella - my sister - there has been some progress since then! Such things as art - as poetry and music - such kinds of new light have come into the world since then!..

...In some kind of people some tenderer feelings have had some little beginning! That we have got to make grow! And cling to, and hold as our flag! In this dark march toward whatever it is we are approaching ... don't - don't hang back with the brutes!"

Apart from the above given examples, you can also write your own monologues if you are good at expressing ideas and emotions.
