Cartoons from the '90s

Rahul Thadani
Talk about cartoons, and the ones we instantly remember are Mickey Mouse, Dexter, Baloo, Batman, etc. They all belong to the '90s, which many people believe, was the period when the best cartoons were made; and this is certainly not far from the truth.
The '90s was a great decade for cartoons and animated series, and the best ones are loved and remembered even today. Those were simpler times, when cartoons definitely seemed funnier and classier than the ones we see today.
Though we all have our personal favorites, there are many other movies and cartoon characters that have left a permanent imprint on our minds.
'90s was undoubtedly the golden age of cartoons and animated series. Even though 3D animation and graphics have progressed by leaps and bounds today, these have something unique and special about them, which all the present day cartoons unfortunately lack.
Most of the below-mentioned cartoons are American, however, there are plenty others, that were made elsewhere, and went down in history as some of the greatest series ever made.

The Unforgettable Ones

The Powerpuff Girls

Professor Utonium added "sugar, spice and everything nice", but accidentally added "Chemical X" to the mixture and whoop!... we got our very own super-girls; tough Buttercup, smart Blossom, and sweet Bubbles! And how can we forget the cute Mayor of Townsville, and his hot secretary Ms. Sara Bellum, whose face was not revealed in the entire series? And the evil (well, that's what he calls himself!) Mojo Jojo, was one of my favorites!

Dexter's Laboratory

High-end gadgets, gizmos, robots, talking computers, this show had it all. The protagonist, Dexter, had a tough time keeping his secret laboratory, a secret from his parents, thanks to his elder sister Dee Dee, who always found her own way of destroying his laboratory, each time she entered it. One of the best CN shows, this cartoon series was considered for the Emmy Awards four times.

SWAT Kats

Flying Cats, Razor and T-bone, defeated enemies who threatened to harm Megakat City in their very own creation, the Turbokat! As a part of the paramilitary enforcement agency, Enforcers, they protected their city without revealing their own identity.
However, they had a tough time dealing with the rude Commander Ulysses Feral, who left no stone unturned in showing his dislike towards the SWAT Kats. By the way, do you guys remember the mighty villain, Dark Kat? I am sure you do!

TaleSpin

Baloo found himself a job as a pilot and was accompanied by the once-pirate, Kit Cloudkicker. Together, they went on many adventurous trips including encounters with air pirates, and other strange situations. Baloo, the protagonist, alongside Louie, the bar owner and Shere Khan, the business tycoon, are adapted from the famous cartoon series, The Jungle Book. Also, Baloo's employer Rebecca Cunningham, plays an important part in the series.

Animaniacs

This Steven Spielberg show had just the right mix of humor and violence. The skit-based show has several awards to its credit, including the Daytime Emmy Awards. This show is also a hot favorite because of the fact that it is the birthplace of our very own Pinky and the Brain.

Johnny Bravo

The man with the pompadour hairstyle and Elvis Presley-ish voice, Johnny Bravo remains one of the most loved cartoon characters. His unsuccessful but constant attempts at winning the heart of any/every girl that he came across, was worth a watch. It was a part of the cartoon series, The What a Cartoon! Show before it was made into a full show.

Pinky and the Brain

The genetically engineered mice, Brain and Pinky, chalk out plans to conquer the world but fail miserably at the end. As the name goes, Brain is the brainy, arrogant mouse, who is usually the mastermind behind the 'taking-over-the-world' plans and Pinky, the good-hearted and insane mouse, helps Brain achieve those plans. The first cartoon series to be created in Dolby surround sound, this series was surely hilarious.

The Scooby-Doo Show

Is there a ghost, that's troubling you? Why not call Mystery Inc.? Scooby Doo, along with his friends Shaggy, Velma, Daphne and Fred, caught hold of notorious villains, who disguised themselves as ghosts and monsters. Despite being scared to the core, Scooby managed to end up being the star, every single time. They did it, 'Scooby Dooby Doo' way! Did I forget to mention the 'Scrappy Dappy Doo' way?

The Addams Family

When we were first introduced to Gomez Addam's family, I am sure, you were as curious to watch the show, as I was! Character like, Thing (the disembodied hand), Snappy (the alligator), and Cousin Itt (had hair all over his body), are some of the unique characters, that have amused and amazed us!
With Wednesday and Pugsley playing 'scary' pranks on each other, Morticia taking care of her plants, and Granny trying to find a boyfriend, the show was truly gripping. Later, a film by the same name was made with Elizabeth Wilson and Raúl Juliá in the lead.

Tiny Toon Adventures

The junior counterparts of the characters from the Looney Toons show, made their appearance in Tiny Toon Adventures. The blue and white male rabbit Buster Bunny, the cute pink female rabbit Babs Bunny, the selfish green male Plucky Duck, the over-eating Hamton Pig, the Tasmanian Dizzy Devil, along with their friends, attended the Acme Looniversity, where they were taught the various ways to be funny! The slapstick humor of the show was something to watch out for.

Darkwing Duck

A spin-off from the famous series Ducktales, Darkwing Duck was the story of a crime fighter who worked as a freelance agent for S.H.U.S.H. Launchpad. A huge fan of Darkwing, pleaded Darkwing to appoint him as Darkwing's sidekick. He even designed Darkwing's vehicle, Thunderquack. With only a gas gun at his disposal, Darkwing fought villains and saved the St. Canard city.

Richie Rich

Stinking rich? That's what our Richie Rich was! Even with all the money, and multiple servants around, he had a heart of gold! Who can forget the super robot maid, Irona, who played savior to Richie every time he landed himself in trouble, and the straight-faced butler, Cadbury, whose mannerisms were beautifully portrayed. And not to forget, Richie's pal who had dollar signs all over his body, the Dollarmation, Dollar!

Doug

When Doug Funnie moved from Bloatsburg to Bluffington, little did he know that he would meet the love of his life, Patti Mayonnaise, and his friend Skeeter, in this new town. He maintained a journal and treated it as his autobiography. The cartoon series formed the basis of the film, Doug's 1st Movie.

Rugrats

All of us revisited our childhood with this cute show. The life of toddlers, Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, Lil, Angelica, and Dil was beautifully depicted with real life experiences, which made the storyline. The show is the longest series and is being aired for 14 years now! No wonder we wished we could become toddlers once again after watching this show!

The Angry Beavers

Two young beavers, Daggett and Norbert, left their home to make it on their own in the forest. Their only wish was to become bachelors and in the journey of becoming that, they landed in trouble and thus, humor was created. How many of you still scream "DOM DOM DOM" when something unusual happens?

Courage the Cowardly Dog

The most frightened dog on the planet had to protect his masters from monsters, who appeared out of nowhere! This sums up the plot of the show for you! But, the misadventures and the humor of the dog is what made the show the most popular in the black comedy genre. Did I hear anyone shout, AAAARGHHH?

Pokémon

Pi-ka-ch-uuuuuu! This show gained popularity in no time. This fantasy/sci-fi show had Ash as the protagonist, whose dream was to become a Pokemon master. The popularity of the show reached new heights with the launch of Pokemon merchandise.

Batman: The Animated Series

The series was the by-product of the earlier batman movies, Batman Returns and Batman. This was the first of its kind, where there was bloodshed shown in cartoons! Batman was accompanied by Robin and Batgirl, and together they battled crime in Gotham city.

Hey Arnold!

The show tells the story of Arnold, who lived with his grandparents, in a boarding house in the town of Hillwood. He was always shown solving problems, that he or his friends would encounter. Do you remember the long shirt that our football head Arnold wore that resembled a skirt?

Ed, Edd n Eddy

The plot of the show was the story of three friends with almost the same name, Ed, Edd and Eddy! Together, they planned to raise money so that they could buy their favorite jawbreakers. However, their plans failed and they landed in trouble every time they tried to implement their plans. It is one of the longest-running animation series ever!
